Although the Bacon Brothers had performed music during their childhood years, their professional career commenced in 1995, well after Kevin Bacon had established himself as a prominent actor in cinema. Together with his older sibling Michael, he formed the roots-oriented duo that year and introduced their first collection, Forosoco, in 1997. Since then the pair has maintained a consistent recording schedule, issuing new material at regular intervals through the 2020s, including the full-length The Way We Love and the shorter Erato.

The project originated at a benefit appearance the brothers gave in their native Philadelphia during 1994. At the time Michael was already active as a musician, fronting the folk-rock ensemble the Good News, issuing several independent albums, and scoring films. Kevin, meanwhile, had built a screen career through performances in National Lampoon's Animal House, Friday the 13th, Diner, Footloose, JFK, and The River Wild. Persuaded by an acquaintance to appear together under the Bacon Brothers name, the one-off event quickly expanded into touring and eventually a sustained partnership, sustained in part by longtime collaborators bassist/guitarist Paul Guzzone, keyboardist Joe Mennonna, and drummer Frank Vilardi.

Their opening album, Forosoco, surfaced in 1997 and was followed in quick succession by Getting There in 1999 and Can't Complain in 2001. The concert recording Live: The No Food Jokes Tour, issued in both audio and video formats, arrived in 2003. After a four-year pause they returned with White Knuckles on SpinArt in 2005, then New Year's Day in 2009. Subsequent activity included an untitled studio set in 2010, the compilation Philadelphia Road in 2011, and the fresh collection 36 Cents in 2014. In 2018 the G.E. Smith-produced album The Bacon Brothers appeared, highlighted by the single "Tom Petty T-Shirt"; its accompanying tour introduced lead guitarist Tim Quick. The Way We Love emerged in 2020, with the EP Erato following in 2022.

During 2022 the duo issued the single "Philly Thing," which was succeeded the next year by "Ballad of the Brothers (The Willie Door)."
