Biography
The German lo-fi trio Bartlebees launched its career in ragged, sweet indie pop during the early 1990s, drawing clear inspiration from the Television Personalities. Although that influence remains unmistakable—most notably through organ contributions by TP’s Dan Treacy on the band’s debut—the German outfit sidesteps the lyrical ambitions of its forebears, favoring bittersweet romantic platitudes rather than cultural commentary or sharp anguish. Released in 1995, From Paths of Pain to Jewels of Glory served as Bartlebees’ first U.S. album, collecting 26 tracks drawn from the group’s initial two German LPs plus several bonus cuts.
