The Boxmasters emerged under the leadership of drummer and vocalist W.R. Thornton, the Academy Award-winning actor and director Billy Bob Thornton best known for Sling Blade, with guitarist and bassist J.D. Andrew completing the core lineup. Their approach transforms 1960s sonic elements for a contemporary context. The 2009 album supplied the term “Modbilly” for their hybrid of British Invasion swing and the hillbilly bop traditions rooted in Nashville and Bakersfield. That country-rock blend anchored their self-titled opening release, the first in a run of double-disc projects that continued across subsequent years. Studio activity stayed steady and abundant, yielding concept records, seasonal collections, and further doubles right through the arrival of Help…I'm Alive in 2022.

Their roots trace to Thornton’s 2007 solo album Beautiful Door. Engineer J.D. Andrew formed a connection with Thornton during those sessions, and the resulting friendship grew into a musical partnership. Michael Wayne Butler joined to expand the recordings, after which the three musicians recognized that their combined sound constituted a band and established the Boxmasters.

Early shows occurred in Southern California and Tecate, Mexico. A Vanguard Records agreement led to the early-2008 appearance of the double album The Boxmasters. An expanded touring configuration added keyboardist Teddy Andreadis, mandolinist and guitarist Brad Davis, and drummer Mike Bruce. The group closed the year with the seasonal release Christmas Cheer. Modbilly arrived in April 2009 as another two-disc set containing one disc of original material and one of covers.

Thornton subsequently placed the Boxmasters on hold to direct Jayne Mansfield's Car, his first feature since All the Pretty Horses in 2000. After the film’s 2012 release, he stepped away for several years before reactivating the project with the 2015 double album Somewhere Down the Road on 101 Ranch Records. Providence also surfaced that year as a self-released title available solely through the band’s website.

Thereafter the output continued at a brisk pace. NDR Records issued the 2016 doubles Boys and Girls…And the World and Tea Surfing. In Stereo! followed on the same label in 2018. The Boxmasters shifted to KeenTone Records for 2019’s Geoff Emerick-produced Speck, with Light Rays appearing the next year. Christmas in California arrived in 2021. By the time Help…I'm Alive reached stores in 2022, Thornton and Andrew were the only remaining original members, though Andreadis continued in the lineup alongside drummer Eric Rhoades, bassist Dave Fowler, and guitarist Kirk McKim.
