Biography
Emerging from Cambridgeshire, England, the Charlottes stood among shoegaze's earliest acts, trailing only My Bloody Valentine and possibly Lush in putting out the single Are You Happy Now? and the EP Lovehappy ahead of the style's peak years in 1990 and 1991. Their sound favored a more forceful drive within the genre, sitting closer to the harder-edged work of Lush and Bleach than to the dreamy atmospheres of early Slowdive. Two singles appeared in 1990 before the group ended its run with the 1991 compilation Things Come Apart. Drummer Simon Scott later entered Slowdive once the band had dissolved.
