Emerging in 1981, the Creatures began as a side project pairing Siouxsie and the Banshees frontwoman Siouxsie Sioux with the band's drummer Budgie. Their initial release came via the EP Wild Things, followed two years afterward by the full-length Feast. Because commitments to the Banshees continued to take precedence for the pair, the Creatures name stayed dormant until the album Boomerang appeared in late 1989. Once the Banshees ended after 1995's The Rapture, Sioux and Budgie—who had married in the interim—declared that the Creatures would become their main outlet, beginning with the 1998 EP Eraser Cut. The following year brought both the full-length Anima Animus and the remix set Hybrids. U.S. Retrace arrived in 2000, assembling previously unreleased material recorded during the Anima Animus period. Also issued in 1999 was Sequins in the Sun, a live recording captured at the June 1999 Glastonbury Festival. Hai!, a studio album featuring KODO drummer Leonard Eto, surfaced in 2003. Siouxsie revealed in 2007 that she and Budgie had divorced, thereby ending their work together under the Creatures banner.
