Biography
Colin and Peter Devlin, the Dublin-born siblings who helm the alt-rock duo the Devlins, sustain their signature fusion of brogue-tinged vocal harmonies and acoustic-driven melodies. Their first long-player, Drift, arrived in 1993 after being tracked at producer Daniel Lanois’s New Orleans facility and displayed an early flair for memorable, hook-driven songwriting. The follow-up, Waiting, earned gold certification in 1997 and established the pair among Ireland’s foremost musical acts. In early 1999 the brothers relocated to a historic rural residence in Kinsale, County Cork, installed a personal studio, and self-produced and engineered their third collection, Consent, which surfaced in early 2002 with primary mixing handled by Tori Amos associates Mark Hawley and Marcel Van Limbeek. Three years afterward they enlisted engineer Danton Supple—known for work with Coldplay, Doves, and Starsailor—to shape their most streamlined recordings to date, resulting in the January 2005 release Waves. Their catalog has likewise found placement on screen: the track “Waiting” appeared on the Six Feet Under soundtrack, while “World Outside” featured in the 2004 film Closer, which starred Julia Roberts, Jude Law, and Natalie Portman.
