In the mid-1960s The Groupies established themselves performing live at New York's The Scene club, leading to a one-off single deal with Atco that produced "Primitive" in early 1966. A not-so-thin rewrite of "Smokestack Lightning," this effort represents a standard American garage interpretation of the Rolling Stones and Yardbirds, though its excitement level may not match the esteem it holds among garage devotees. Reissues later included it on Pebbles Vol. 10 and the Nuggets box set. The flipside, a similarly crude R&B cover of "I'm a Hog for You," surfaced on the Ear-Piercing Punk compilation.
