The Hollywood Flames maintained an enduring presence on the Los Angeles doo-wop scene despite frequent changes in membership. One of the founding members when the group formed in 1950 was Bobby Day, and over the following years the Flames issued numerous sides on Hollywood, Specialty, Lucky, Swingtime, Money, and assorted other imprints. Their lone major success arrived in 1957 on Ebb Records with the driving “Buzz Buzz Buzz,” which featured lead vocals from Earl Nelson, later one half of Bob & Earl; several follow-up Ebb singles took a similarly playful, upbeat approach. Day later scored a solo hit with “Rockin’ Robin,” while the Flames returned to the charts once more in 1961 on Chess with “Gee,” this time fronted by Donald Height.
