Biography
Formed as a singular excursion into country by the storied Los Angeles punk outfit X, The Knitters brought together the band’s vocalist Exene Cervenka, singer and bassist John Doe, drummer D.J. Bonebrake, and guitarist Dave Alvin of the Blasters. In an ironic twist, Alvin briefly took over the guitar chair after X’s founding player Billy Zoom departed in 1986. Their sole album, the 1985 release Poor Little Critter on the Road, gathered original material, covers, and acoustic reworkings of earlier X songs, all recast in an assortment of country-rooted styles that stretched from swing to traditional forms.
