Formed as a high-school female trio in 1960s Chicago, the Lovelites notched a sizable teen-angst hit with "How Can I Tell My Mom & Dad" on Uni in 1969. Although the lyrics never mentioned the subject outright, the track carried an implicit focus on teen pregnancy, a situation many circles at the time considered more devastating than death. Patti Hamilton, her sister Rozena Petty, and Barbara Peterman made up the original lineup, with Ardell McDaniel taking Peterman’s spot in 1968. Joni Berlman then replaced Petty in 1970, and Rhonda Grayson replaced McDaniel in 1971. Strong enough sales of the single prompted the group to launch its own Lovelite Records in 1970. The imprint operated until 1973, issuing one R&B Top 40 single, "My Conscience," in 1971. The Lovelites disbanded that same year.
