Biography
A quartet blending two male and two female voices, the Soul Children gravitated toward melodramatic ballads centered on infidelity. Stax Records added the group to its roster in the final years of the 1960s, and their first appearance on the soul listings arrived with the multi-segment single “The Sweeter He Is.” Commercial momentum reached its height in the closing months of 1974 when “I’ll Be the Other Woman” crossed into the pop Top 40. Once Stax shuttered in 1975, the Soul Children moved to Epic before releasing a string of up-tempo dance tracks on Fantasy’s revived Stax imprint. Output ceased by the close of the decade, yet the members regrouped nearly thirty years afterward to issue the 2008 album Still Standing.
