Biography
The Mudlarks consisted of soprano Mary Mudd, baritone Fred Mudd and tenor Jeff Mudd, forming a clean-cut family pop trio based in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England. Their public performances began as the Mudd Trio in 1951, when the three siblings were only 12, 14 and 16 years old. Discovery by disc jockey David Jacobs led to sessions on Columbia Records produced by Norrie Paramor, and the trio scored a 1958 hit with their second single, ‘Lollipop’, a cover of the Chordettes’ American success. The next release, ‘Book Of Love’—originally recorded by the Monotones—likewise entered the UK Top 10. Frequent appearances on the pioneering UK television series 6.5 Special followed, along with victories in the New Musical Express poll as Top British Vocal Group for both 1958 and 1959. Early in 1959 Jeff received his army call-up, after which David Lane took his place until his return two years later. Among the limited number of UK pop groups active in the 1950s, they cut several further cover versions of US hits but secured no additional chart entries.
