Hailing from South Bend, Indiana, the rock and roll outfit the Rivieras delivered a lone major success that stood as one of the final bursts of unadulterated domestic rock and roll just before the British Invasion swept the airwaves. The founding lineup—Otto Nuss on organ, Doug Gean on bass, Marty "Bo" Fortson handling vocals and guitar, Joe Pennell on guitar, and Paul Dennert on drums—had already become fixtures at area teen dance halls. They cut an electrified take on Joe Jones’s R&B near-hit “California Sun,” highlighted by its driving drum opening and the instantly recognizable guitar-and-organ hook. That track climbed the charts amid the initial wave of Beatlemania, only to be kept from the top national position by “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” A handful of other strong singles and two full albums appeared afterward, yet the members’ youth, ongoing lineup shifts triggered by the draft, and the shifting musical landscape brought the band to an end by 1966. Nuss, Gean, and Fortson revived the Rivieras in the mid-’80s, cutting new material and playing regional dates while retaining their original spark. Although their moment of prominence proved fleeting, the single enduring hit still captures for later listeners everything that pulses at the heart of American teen-band rock and roll.
