Biography
Emerging as one of the leading groups among the initial wave of surf ensembles from Southern California, the Challengers came together under the leadership of drummer Richard Delvy once he departed from the Bel-Airs, the group responsible for issuing "Mr. Moto," among the earliest surf singles ever pressed. Their first full-length release, Surfbeat, appeared in early 1963 and stood as one of the pioneering all-instrumental surf LPs, moving an impressive 200,000 units—a remarkable figure for any act confined to regional appeal. Over the ensuing few years they issued multiple albums, drawing the bulk of their material from renditions of well-known rock and surf numbers; while these efforts generated considerable excitement back then, the absence of fresh ideas can render their output rather standard fare upon later listening. Among their tracks, the atmospheric "K-39" has endured as the most renowned, and it continues to surface on various surf anthologies.
