In the company of Minnesota's Trashmen, Colorado's Astronauts stood out as the leading surf ensemble from the landlocked Midwest during the 1960s. Numerous singles and albums came from their sessions, bringing them widespread acclaim across the region, yet their sole minor national success arrived with the track "Baja." Lacking substantial original compositions, the band strategically drew from prominent songwriters including Lee Hazelwood, responsible for "Baja," along with Roger Christian and Gary Usher, while also interpreting pieces from Dick Dale and Henry Mancini. Instrumentals represented their finest work, featuring abundant Fender reverb alongside a pair of rhythm guitars, whereas vocal efforts proved considerably weaker.
