The Crossfires, initially a competent surf ensemble, gained their primary recognition through their eventual metamorphosis into the Turtles, who achieved stardom as a pop and folk outfit during the mid-1960s. Prior to this shift, the band issued a pair of singles confined to local markets, while additional unreleased recordings from both studio sessions and live performances emerged decades afterward. Characterized as an ordinary or marginally ordinary surf unit distinguished by an elevated level of eccentricity, the group's standout tracks such as "Fiberglass Jungle" and "Out Of Control" conveyed an authentic sense of propulsive intensity, even as most of their material adhered to conventional surf-infused frat rock patterns. The follow-up release "One Potato Two Potato" indicated a move in the direction of garage rock, providing the sole approximate indication of the path the musicians would pursue upon becoming the Turtles.
