Genre: Classical ,Choral ,Central/West Asian
Origin: U.S.A
Listen on Coda
Originating from the Rustavi Company, a collective devoted to folksong and dance, the all-male Rustavi Choir (pronounced: roostahvi) has spent more than three decades performing the polyphonic vocal traditions of Soviet Georgia. Anzor Erkomaishvili, a seventh-generation performer who directs the ensemble, launched the group soon after finishing his training at the Tbilisi Conservatory. While a cappella settings form the core of their programs, selected pieces feature native Georgian stringed instruments such as the chongun and the phanduri. In 1993 the Federal Republic of Germany awarded the Rustavi Choir the Albert Schweitzer Prize for its "high artistic standards and its efforts to promote friendship."
