During a stretch of inactivity for power pop outfit Weezer that stretched from the middle of 1997 into the middle of 2000, the group's drummer Patrick Wilson devoted his energies to a separate endeavor called the Special Goodness. The project's title originated in a personal motto Wilson had created during his time in Weezer to capture the atmosphere he aimed to achieve in performance. An expressive player who had contributed backing vocals to several Weezer songs, Wilson entered the studio to handle vocals along with guitars, keyboards, and percussion across a set of reflective power pop compositions. Plans for an arrangement with DGC (Geffen), the same imprint that issued Weezer's recordings, ultimately collapsed, prompting Wilson to issue the self-titled album first via Japan's Rock Records, a territory where Weezer already enjoyed substantial support. By autumn 1999 the Buffalo native began live appearances alongside childhood acquaintance Pat Finn, Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh, longtime roadie and associate Karl Koch, and drummer Lee Loretta. The ensemble completed two low-key American tours while maintaining regular rehearsals and songwriting sessions in Portland, OR, the city Wilson had made his home. Vast Records in Seattle later committed to distributing the album domestically.
