An R&B quintet boasting a storied history of chart successes, the Whispers originated in Los Angeles through the efforts of Walter Scott and his twin Wallace Scott, alongside Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon, the last of whom departed during 1973. Their initial release, "I Was Born When You Kissed Me," appeared via the Dore imprint back in 1964. The group achieved their debut soul chart entry in 1969 via "The Time Has Come," issued on Soul Clock, followed by their first R&B Top Ten placement the subsequent year with "Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong." Continued success came through associations with Janus, Soul Train, and Solar, highlighted by the 1980 solid gold number one "And the Beat Goes On" and the 1987 urban contemporary chart-topper "Rock Steady." Although Walter and Wallace Scott, who had served as the ensemble's primary vocalists and key attractions from the beginning, pursued individual paths in 1993, they stayed affiliated with the Whispers. January 5, 2023, marked the passing of co-founder Gordy Harmon at age 79 in his Los Angeles, CA residence.
