The Zydepunks, a New Orleans quintet, fuse folk and punk much as Gogol Bordello and Flogging Molly have done, shaping music that stretches established limits while remaining anchored in tradition. Celebrated for their frenzied renditions of European and Louisiana folk material and a multilingual songbook performed in English, German, French, Spanish, Yiddish, and Portuguese, the ensemble formed in 2004, swiftly attracted a loyal audience, and issued its debut recording, 9th Ward Ramblers. The group anticipated continued progress in 2005, yet catastrophe arrived soon after the release of its second album, ...And the Streets Will Flow with Whiskey, when Hurricane Katrina struck. All bandmembers survived, and three returned to undamaged homes, but the city itself was destroyed. Surmounting these severe disruptions, the Zydepunks reconvened to perform at the New Orleans Voodoo Music Festival. Exile Waltz, their third album, appeared in August 2007, with a fourth release planned for 2008.
