Biography
Theodis Ealey, a blues vocalist, guitarist, and ensemble leader, carries the moniker "the Bluesman Lover." Though he initially built recognition through associations with leading blues figures, Ealey cultivated a devoted audience via his bold R&B numbers centered on romance and intimacy. Born in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1947 as one of eleven siblings, he received his first guitar instruction at age four from his older brother Y.Z. Ealey. Roughly a decade afterward, the siblings performed together in Y.Z. Ealey & the Merrymakers, with Theodis on bass alongside a third brother, Melwin Ealey. About a year later he switched to guitar and entered Eugene Butler & the Rocking Royals, a group active in the Natchez area.
Seeking broader horizons, Ealey enlisted in the Air Force and completed a six-year posting in Hawaii. Following his release, he resided briefly in Oakland before establishing himself in Atlanta during the early 1990s. Working as a versatile guitarist, he secured engagements supporting Little Milton, Richard "Dimples" Fields, Charles Brown, and Johnny Clyde Copeland. Recognized as a premier sideman, Ealey soon took the lead role himself, prompting Ichiban Records to offer a contract. His solo debut, Headed Back to Huntsville, appeared in 1992, with three further albums issued over the subsequent six years; during this span he toured Europe repeatedly. In 1994 he received the Male Vocalist Top Star Award in San Francisco, and three years later earned the Mo' Better Blues Male Artist of the Year honor in Atlanta.
After Ichiban ceased operations, Ealey founded his own imprint, IFGAM Records ("I Feel Good About Myself"). Its inaugural release, It's a Real Good Thang, arrived in 2002—the same year he reached hip-hop listeners via a guest spot on Ghetto Mafia's On da Grind. Stand Up in It followed in 2004; its title track, a lighthearted and risqué bedroom commentary, emerged as an unexpected hit single that remained on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart for 21 weeks and attained the top position. The 2006 albums I'm the Man You Need and the anthology Let Me Put the Head in It supplied additional double-entendre blues and soul material tailored to his expanding audience. Live, issued in 2009, preserved the intensity of his touring ensemble and his prowess as guitarist and stage performer. Released in 2013, You and I, Together fused Ealey's sensual approach with selections recalling vintage soul and classic country styles.
