Biography
British electronic musician Tipper stands out as an inventive and highly regarded sound designer who sustains a steady stream of recordings while building a strong reputation as a live act, regularly performing at festivals and occasionally assembling events of his own. A central presence in the nu breaks movement of the late 1990s, he later broadened his scope through intricate, technically sophisticated projects such as the 2000 album The Critical Path. He pivoted toward downtempo music on 2003’s Surrounded, then turned to experimental hip-hop with 2005’s Tip Hop, the inaugural release on his self-titled label. Across the 2000s and 2010s, Tipper’s output guided glitch-hop away from its initial ties to IDM and toward a bass-driven, festival-oriented EDM form. Both his stage performances and studio work have moved fluidly between slower material, including 2014’s Forward Escape, and higher-energy selections such as 2022’s Marble Hunting, interspersed with occasional ambient collections.
Dave Tipper began DJing while still a teenager and connected with Richie Warren, who took on management duties. Together they established the Fuel label, through which Tipper issued three vinyl EPs; the dynamic 1998 single “Twister” gained wider notice after appearing in an advertising campaign. He followed with several breakbeat mix CDs, then signed to Sony’s Higher Ground imprint, which put out his first full-length, The Critical Path, in 2000. More suited to home listening than the dance record the label anticipated, the album remained his sole major-label release.
While completing that project, Tipper developed hearing damage linked to powerful stereo systems in his vehicles. Once the issue was resolved, he delivered his second album, Holding Pattern, early the following year, prompting tours across Europe and America. Later in 2001 came the DJ mix Tipper Presents Sound Off. He and Mike Wallis created the IDM duo Crunch, whose 2001 debut appeared on Funkstörung’s Musik Aus Strom before additional material surfaced on their own Colony Productions. Tipper’s Surrounded arrived on Myutopia Recordings in 2003 and ranked among the earliest electronic albums captured in 5.1 Surround Sound. The same label issued Cell: Five, a multi-channel DVD-Audio recording under the Correctional Facilities alias, near year’s end.
Tip Hop inaugurated the Tippermusic label in 2005. Featuring Tipper’s own scratching alongside guest raps by Epcot, the record became a landmark in glitch-hop. His imprint next released 2006’s The Seamless Unspeakable Something and Relish the Trough, along with the bass-forward Wobble Factor and Tertiary Noise in 2008. With 2010’s Broken Soul Jamboree, he leaned further into a downtempo, ambient direction.
Following several EPs, Tipper stated in 2013 that health matters would restrict his festival schedule; he issued Dusty Bubble Box: EP Remixes that year to offset medical costs, which included cardiac surgery. After a recovery period, he returned with 2014’s Forward Escape, which reached the Top 20 on Billboard’s electronic albums chart. Festival appearances thereafter were divided into distinct uptempo or downtempo sets.
Two EPs, Fathoms EP and It’s Like..., surfaced in 2015, while Flunked EP arrived in 2017 and became his highest-charting release, peaking at number 15 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. He organized the Tipper & Friends Festival and staged the 4321 event to mark the solar eclipse on August 21. Lattice EP followed in October, with additional Tipper & Friends gatherings held in New Orleans and Live Oak, Florida. The largely downtempo Jettison Mind Hatch appeared in 2019. In 2021 Tipper reissued numerous earlier albums on vinyl and released the EP Insolito, before the compact, driving Marble Hunting arrived in 2022.
