Biography
German saxophonist Tobias Meinhart, born in 1983, creates harmonically sophisticated post-bop jazz. European performances throughout the mid-2000s first brought him notice, while wider acclaim followed his 2010 relocation to New York. Frequent work with trumpeter Ingrid Jensen yielded the albums Natural Perception in 2015 and Silent Dreamer in 2017.
Regensburg marked his birthplace, yet his formative years unfolded in the small Bavarian village of Wörth an der Donau under the influence of a grandfather who had played classical bass in U.S. Army clubs after World War II. Drums drew his attention around age seven, though the saxophone became his instrument by age thirteen. After secondary school he enrolled at the Music College in Basel for lessons with saxophonist Domenic Landolf, later continuing at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam and the Berne College of Art. Drawing upon Carla Bley, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, and Stan Getz, he formed the group Fourscore and released the debut album Add to Friends in 2008.
The move to New York City took place in 2010, where he earned a master’s degree in jazz performance from Queens College two years later. His sophomore quartet recording, Pursuit of Happiness, appeared in 2011, followed by the 2014 album In Between, captured during a return visit to Germany. Engagements with pianist Aaron Goldberg and tours alongside trumpeter Ingrid Jensen also occupied this period. Natural Perception, his fourth album, reached listeners via Enja in 2015 and featured Jensen together with pianist Yago Vazquez, bassist Phil Donkin, and drummer Jesse Simpson. The German Echo Award Nomination for Newcomer of the Year arrived the next year. Silent Dreamer reunited the same personnel with Jensen in 2017. In 2019 Berlin People paired him with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and longtime German associates pianist Ludwig Hornung, bassist Tom Berkmann, and drummer Mathias Ruppnig.
