Biography
The Canadian-American singer/songwriter duo Tommy Lefroy consists of Tessa Mouzourakis and Wynter Bethel, whose intelligent, folk-infused indie rock gained viral traction during 2021. After their initial EP Flight Risk brought them a Juno nomination in Canada, the pair issued the follow-up Rivals EP in early 2023.
Mouzourakis, hailing from Canada, encountered American Bethel in Nashville as each pursued independent paths in music. A mutual appreciation for boygenius sparked their connection once Mouzourakis shared an online rendition of the group's track "Ketchem, ID." Although Mouzourakis later relocated to London and Bethel to Los Angeles, the two commenced remote songwriting and production in 2021. Their project adopted the name of Thomas Langlois Lefroy, the Irish politician believed to have inspired the character Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
Boasting this Austen-inspired name alongside alt-pop sensibilities and rich vocal harmonies, Tommy Lefroy climbed swiftly in popularity by dropping Flight Risk during 2021 and attaining viral attention via the track "The Cause." Throughout 2022, their audience expanded, leading Norwegian pop star Sigrid to select them as tour openers. In addition, the duo inked a deal with Canadian independent label Pheromone Recordings and put out their first release on the imprint, "Dog Eat Dog." This period also saw a nomination for Breakthrough Group of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2023. March brought the arrival of their second EP, Rivals.
