Biography
Fenne Lily, the English singer and songwriter, renders her melancholic material in a quiet, restrained delivery. Having absorbed the influence of Joni Mitchell and later Laura Marling, she had already shaped a deeply personal style by her mid-teens that conveyed a maturity beyond her age. Her first album, On Hold, appeared in 2018, preceding her introduction on Dead Oceans with Breach in 2020. The subdued, introspective tone persisted on her third album Big Picture (2023), which followed the arc of a romantic relationship.
Born in Dorset, Fenne Lily began writing songs early in life. While shuttling between Dorset and Bristol at seventeen, she secured opening slots with C Duncan, KT Tunstall, and Marika Hackman, establishing a foothold in the U.K. folk and songwriter community. Her debut single, the spare acoustic “Top to Toe,” written at fifteen, drew millions of streams in 2016. Follow-up tracks such as “What’s Good” and “For a While” achieved similar traction as she appeared on festival stages. In January 2018 she released “On Hold,” the title track of her debut album, which arrived that March filled with numerous melancholic ballads. After signing with Dead Oceans in early 2020, she issued the song “Hypochondriac.” Recorded with producer Brian Deck and Steve Albini, her second album Breach came out that September. She next joined fellow U.K. singer/songwriter Keir for “Leave a Light On,” released in April 2021.
Her subsequent LP was made with Brad Cook at his Durham, North Carolina studio and featured her touring band alongside guests Christian Lee Hutson on guitar and Katy Kirby on vocals. Mixed by Jay Som’s Melina Duterte, Big Picture contained ten songs composed across the span of a relationship and reached Dead Oceans in April 2023.
