Tre Mission, a rapper and producer, first felt pulled toward grime purely by the genre’s suggestive title, yet this British style, together with its later extension dubstep, soon anchored his own sound. Although dubstep had emerged from the United Kingdom, he gravitated instead toward the heavier, more resonant variant that flourished south of his native Toronto, Canada, where he grew up under a Trinidadian mother and Jamaican father. Bob Marley’s reggae recordings provided his earliest soundtrack at home, after which hip-hop arrived and opened the door to grime through the music of Dizzee Rascal.

In 2010 he dropped his opening set of grime-rooted freestyles and cuts, among them “Hold Up,” which reached BBC DJ Tim Westwood. The EP The Practice Mission appeared the following year, and Malmaison, his first mixtape, surfaced in 2013. Signing with Ninja Tune in 2014, he issued his debut album Stigmata on the label that same year.
