Grime MC Ghetts infuses even his most accessible material with a menacing edge. Turning his attention to individual work in 2005 after time spent in various grime crews, he maintained a steady output of mixtapes while lending his sinuous delivery and dark cadences to studio efforts such as the 2021 release Conflict of Interest, which peaked at number two on the U.K. albums chart, and to guest spots alongside Stormzy, Skepta, and additional artists.

Justin Clarke entered the world in Plaistow, East London, during 1984. He began within the grime collective NASTY Crew, later departing to form the Movement that included Devlin, Wretch 32, and Schorcher. Following imprisonment at age 18, Clarke issued his initial mixtape under the name Ghetto, 2005’s 2000 & Life, then returned in 2007 with the more measured Ghetto Gospel. The harder-edged successor Freedom of Speech appeared the next year, carrying contributions from Devlin, Chipmunk, and Wretch 32. His fourth mixtape, The Calm Before the Storm, arrived in 2010 as the first project credited to Ghetts; it raised his standing inside the grime community and secured broader attention once a dance remix of the single “Sing 4 Me” was adopted by U.K. label All Around the World.

He continued dropping tracks through assorted grime outlets and platforms, among them the MTV-targeted “Who’s on the Panel,” before delivering his first proper studio album, Rebel with a Cause, in 2014. That collection drew on earlier mixtapes and singles to assemble a set of intense, crossover grime cuts delivered in his rapid, sharp manner. Between Rebel with a Cause and the following studio album, Ghetts put out independent tracks and projects including the 2015 collaboration 653 with Rude Kid. In 2018 the second studio album, Ghetto Gospel 2: The New Testament, emerged with appearances from President T, Suspect OTB, Stefflon Don, and further guests.

Subsequent years saw Ghetts featured on recordings by Jacob Banks and Che Lingo. During 2020 he released the tracks “Proud Family” and “IC3,” the latter carrying Skepta, and in January 2021 he unveiled “Skengman,” a Stormzy pairing that swiftly surpassed one million streams. His third studio album, Conflict of Interest, followed in February 2021. Expanding across a broader swath of rap styles, the set incorporated input from Giggs, Dave, and Ed Sheeran.
