Biography
Infusing classical music with a sensual commercial edge that stood apart from its typically austere domain, Vanessa-Mae transitioned from an established classical recording path to popular music through her breakout 1994 release, The Violin Player. She entered the world as Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson in 1979, born to a Thai-Chinese couple residing in Singapore, and began piano studies at age three before switching to violin at five. Growing up in London, she made her orchestral debut with the London Philharmonic in 1989, an event that was captured on record along with two additional pieces tracked between 1990 and 1992 during her tours alongside the London Mozart Players.
Shifting focus to solo work while remaining with EMI, she issued The Violin Player in 1994. The project gradually gained traction within popular circles and registered on multiple international charts. Now holding English citizenship, she earned a 1996 BRIT Award nomination for Best British Female. Storm appeared in 1998, followed a year later by The Original Four Seasons & The Devil's Trill Sonata.
