Began her path in music during 1988 by serving as a backing vocalist with minor groups throughout the São Paulo region, where she crossed paths with samba-reggae exponent Luiz Vagner, an encounter that shaped one of her key influences. Following earlier collaborations with then-journalist Chico César, she entered Itamar Assumpção’s ensembles Isca de Polícia and As Orquídeas in 1990 as a backing vocalist and stayed through 1994, contributing in that span to two further albums alongside Assumpção. Her solo work began in 1994 with a supporting unit that included bassist Paulo Lepetit, guitarist Chico César, and percussionist Renato Braz, who was later succeeded by Caíto Marcondes before guitarist Luís Chagas joined the lineup. With this ensemble she cut her initial solo album, the 1995 CD Vange Milliet, drawing on material from fresh composers that included Chico César, Zeca Baleiro, and André Abujamra. Special guests Lanny Gordin and Jards Macalé helped draw the attention of critics whose favorable notices paved the way for tours throughout Brazil and Europe.
