Roberta Sá stands out as a critically acclaimed MPB vocalist whose first two albums preceded a 2008 Latin Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category. Although her sound stays thoroughly modern, it weaves in traditional Brazilian musical styles and repertoire, prompting frequent comparisons to fellow young MPB vocalist Maria Rita, who likewise updates classic Brazilian songs with contemporary flair. Born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, Sá first drew notice as a contestant on the Pop Idol-style reality program Fama, broadcast on Globo TV. She ultimately fell short of victory yet left a strong enough mark to be invited to record the Dorival Caymmi composition “A Vizinha do Lado” for the soundtrack of the Globo TV telenovela Novela das Oito; that track later appeared on the 2003 compilation Celebridade. A major-label deal with Universal ensued, leading to her debut full-length solo album, Brasileiro (2005), produced in partnership with Rodrigo Campello. She reunited with Campello for the follow-up Que Belo Estranho Dia Pra Se Ter Alegria (2007), whose strong critical reception secured the Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist two years later.
