Biography
Born in Athens, the Greek composer and producer Vangelis Katsoulis first absorbed the avant-garde currents of the 1970s before his later output began weaving in jazz, rock, orchestral passages, minimalism, new age, and ambient electronics. He should not be mistaken for the similarly named Greek composer Vangelis, whose full name is Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou. Katsoulis pursued musical studies in both Greece and Germany and delivered his debut album in 1975. During the 1980s improvisation, jazz, and electronic textures gained greater prominence in his pieces, and in 1989 he helped establish the independent label Utopia. Beyond a substantial catalog of studio recordings that features such standouts as Through the Dark, Silent Voyage, and Pictures from Inside, he has worked extensively as a producer and as a composer for film and television, earning the top award for best soundtrack at the 1994 Thessaloniki International Film Festival. In 2014 he issued Sleeping Beauties, an anthology of early and previously unreleased material.
