Among the wave of British rock and pop performers surfacing in the closing years of the 1950s, Eager ranked as one of the stronger prospects on Larry Parnes’ roster of talent. Rolled out in spring 1958 and assigned the stage name Eager to reflect his energetic manner, the vocalist secured spots on several high-profile television programs, most prominently Jack Good’s trailblazing Oh Boy. Industry observers anticipated that he would mirror the UK chart progress of Parnes’ earlier signings Tommy Steele and Marty Wilde, yet a run of singles supplied by songwriters such as Floyd Robinson, Marty Robbins, Conway Twitty and Gene Pitney brought no comparable success. Steady top billing on the BBC Television series Drumbeat provided further visibility, but momentum faded after the partnership with Parnes ended. Years afterward he appeared in a stage production of the musical Elvis.
