A fluid assembly of Los Angeles studio players, the Vitamin String Quartet has established its singular position by crafting string-ensemble renditions of material originally performed by an array of major rock, pop, and country acts. Operating under the Vitamin Records imprint since 1999, the ensemble has issued more than three hundred albums, the majority devoted to one artist’s catalog or an entire album reinterpreted, while additional volumes gather material around chosen moods, styles, or genres. Among these projects stand collections honoring David Bowie, Madonna, Slayer, Michael Jackson, Kanye West, and the Flaming Lips, alongside thematic sets such as The Gay Wedding Collection, My Metal Valentine, and Music from the Films of John Hughes. In 2022 the group released the year-in-review packages VSQ Performs the Hits of 2021, Vols. 1 and 2, and followed them in 2024 with a volume of Taylor Swift material.
Membership has always shifted, yet violinist and arranger Tom Tally has remained central, producing and shaping more than fifty Vitamin String Quartet albums. The 2009 release Per_Versions marked an expansion, pairing covers of several alternative pop acts with newly written pieces. VSQ Performs Lady Gaga reached the Billboard Classical Albums top ten the next year, and in 2011 the ensemble appeared alongside Thirty Seconds to Mars on MTV Unplugged, the resulting live EP placing in the upper half of the Billboard 200. Television placements have included So You Think You Can Dance, The Vampire Diaries, Modern Family, and Westworld. Further tribute sets throughout the decade addressed Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sigur Rós, Kanye West, and The World of Studio Ghibli, issued in 2017.
Early-2020s subjects encompassed Lana Del Rey, My Chemical Romance, and the Weeknd, while annual hit surveys continued with the March 2022 appearance of VSQ Performs the Hits of 2021, Vol. 2. The quartet contributed tracks to 2023’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story: Covers from the Netflix Series and, with 2024’s VSQ Performs Taylor Swift, reached number 23 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart.
