Vusi Ximba's outspoken lyrics curtailed his radio exposure, yet his recordings gained devoted followings across South Africa's black townships. His sharp wit and lighthearted melodies remain central as he continues to fuse the concertina tradition of South Africa with Zulu pop and Maskanda, the style also called Zulu rap. Born in Mandeni, a modest village along the northern coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Ximba entered the music scene in the 1970s, staging performances that featured humorous skits with his female dancers. His first solo album, Siyakudumisa, appeared in 1992 and surpassed 100,000 copies sold. In 1998 he tracked Umthandazi Ejoyintini together with bassist and producer Maxwell Mngadi.
