Biography
Among the final masters of traditional Cajun fiddle, Wade Fruge stood out with his refined approach. His performances featured subtle ornamental notes, sharp harmonic clusters, and vigorous bow strokes, blending heartfelt expression with precise technical command. Despite pursuing music only as an avocation, the depth of his passion infused his interpretations with an uncommon intensity of feeling. He drew much of his material from familial sources, specifically his grandfather Napoleon Fruge, as well as from the blues-tinged fiddler Douglas Ballard, the same individual who instructed Canray Fontenot. All twenty-five recordings made by Fruge over the course of his life appeared together on the release Old Style Cajun Music, which included contributions from Michael Doucet alongside Marc and Ann Savoy.
