Biography
Johnnie Allan rose to prominence as a Cajun artist already during his adolescence, serving as the steel guitarist for accordionist Lawrence Walker's group. Following the ensemble's dissolution, Allan joined forces with U.J. Meaux—a pianist, fiddler, and cousin to producer Huey Meaux—within the rock group known as the Krazy Kats. Throughout the latter part of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s, he persisted in delivering rock and roll and R&B performances. His career involved juggling music with educational responsibilities, including a stint as principal at an elementary school. Popularity reached new heights thanks to the success of his Cajun-infused rendition of Chuck Berry's "Promised Land." Combining rock's flashy style with authentic Cajun roots defines Allan's sound, which has found release on various regional imprints.
