Known as "the Cajun Springsteen," Wayne Toups ranks among the most thrilling musicians to emerge from Acadiana. His commanding stage presence is amplified by his flamboyant accordion technique, which drives the music he labels "zydecajun." This approach blends the classic sounds of Cajun country with the blues-driven energy of zydeco while incorporating a rock & roll edge. Toups first picked up the accordion in his early teens, released his debut single in 1975, and quickly became a Louisiana star through his high-voltage take on Cajun music. One of the earliest Cajun artists signed to a major label, he reached a national audience with the 1989 album Blast from the Bayou. Even after moving to smaller labels, he sustained a devoted following with up to 200 performances a year, delivering hard-rocking sets on releases such as Back to the Bayou (1995) and Whoever Said It Was Easy (2004). Personal difficulties paused his career in the mid-2000s, yet he returned with renewed strength, earning a Grammy Award for the 2012 collaboration The Band Courtbouillon alongside fellow Cajun stars Steve Riley and Wilson Savoy and exploring his country leanings on 2016's Wayne Toups.

Born in 1958, Toups absorbed Cajun culture while growing up in Crowley, Louisiana. He began playing accordion at 13 and soon took to the stage, interpreting the work of masters such as Iry LeJeune and Belton Richard. After performing with the Crowley Aces and Camey Doucet, he aimed to connect with a younger audience. His energetic mix of roots rock and traditional Louisiana music, accented with soul and classic rock touches, appealed to both new listeners and longtime fans of Cajun and zydeco styles. The rock & roll character and primarily English lyrics immediately attracted mainstream listeners as well as Cajun enthusiasts open to fresh sounds. As his "zydecajun" music spread across the South, Mercury Records noticed the momentum, signed him, and issued Zydecajun in 1985.

Mercury devoted stronger promotion to 1988's Blast from the Bayou, which succeeded and expanded his reach beyond the South. Toups followed with two more Mercury albums, 1990's Johnnie Can't Dance and 1991's Fish Out of Water, while maintaining a relentless touring schedule that carried his sound around the globe. Festival and television appearances made him one of the most visible representatives of his culture. He contributed to soundtracks for the television series Broken Badges and the film Steel Magnolias. Toups also backed prominent country singers including Mark Chesnutt, Alan Jackson, George Jones, and Clay Walker. Returning to his origins in his own distinctive fashion, he joined the Louisiana-based Swallow Records for 1995's Back to the Bayou, which became the label's fastest seller. His first Shanachie release, Little Wooden Box (2000), featured songs in both French and English as well as traditional tunes recast as rockers.

His second Shanachie album, Whoever Said It Was Easy, appeared in 2004, followed the next year by Reflections of the Past, a collection of traditional Cajun favorites. Toups endured a difficult 2005 when he was arrested and convicted on federal charges of cocaine distribution. He served ten months in prison, yet the episode marked a turning point as he achieved sobriety and earned his high-school equivalency diploma. No further recordings surfaced until Live in 2009. Married in 2012, Toups released the trio album The Band Courtbouillon with Steve Riley and Wilson Savoy; it received a Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album the following year. Live at Jazzfest 2013, drawn from his set that spring at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival—where he performed for 27 consecutive years, more than any other artist—was issued by MunckMix. In 2015 Toups signed with the Southern blues and R&B label Malaco Records and began work on his first album for the company. He became a father the next January. Wayne Toups arrived in April 2016, extending his zydecajun sound enriched by modern and classic country and R&B. MunckMix issued another live set, Live at Jazzfest 2017, in 2017.
