Biography
Walter Klien, an Austrian pianist celebrated for his command of Schubert’s keyboard works, forged a vast discography through his partnership with the VOX label—an alliance that simultaneously secured his recorded output and confined his wider recognition. Born in Graz in 1928 to visual artist Erika Giovanna Klien, he remained unknown to her relatives at first; the following year she relocated to the United States to advance her own artistic and pedagogical ambitions. Klien took up the piano at five, receiving his initial lessons in Frankfurt before pursuing studies in piano, composition, and conducting in Graz. In 1953 he completed his training at the Vienna Music Academy under Josef Dichler and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. During this period he earned prizes at the Bolzano Busoni Competition in both 1951 and 1952, the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition held in Paris in 1954, and the Bosendorfer Prize in 1953. These achievements prompted his first sessions for VOX, where he initially served as accompanist to singers Julius Patzak and Norman Foster. He soon joined Alfred Brendel for recordings of four-hand repertoire by Brahms, Mozart, and Dvořák. Worldwide tours occupied the 1960s, highlighted by acclaimed London appearances in 1968 and an American debut in 1969—the same year he received the Wiener Flötenuhr Prize for his complete Mozart Piano Sonatas on disc. He maintained an active schedule of concerts and recordings through the following decade, establishing a reputation for Austrian and German classics. Early-1980s projects with Arthur Grumiaux and Wolfgang Schneiderhan yielded extensive chamber-music documentation. Although his prolific VOX catalog preserved numerous authoritative performances, the label’s budget-oriented image kept him comparatively overlooked. He nevertheless became the first pianist to commit the entirety of Brahms’s solo piano music to record, and his traversal of Schubert’s sonatas remains especially esteemed. Additional concerto recordings encompassed works by Stravinsky, Janáček, and Honegger.
