Biography
Hailing from Austin, Texas, the indie rock outfit White Denim centers on the longstanding partnership between James Petralli, who handles vocals and guitars, and Steve Terebecki on bass. The group forged a propulsive style marked by jagged guitar lines and relentless drive, pulling from psychedelic and garage rock, punk, funk, jazz, blues, and prog rock sources. Their initial recording appeared as a power trio via the 2007 EP Let's Talk About It, after which they broadened both personnel and sonic range for the 2011 quartet debut D. Chart entry in both the U.S. and U.K. arrived with the fifth album Corsicana Lemonade in 2013, while Stiff reached the U.K. Top 20 in 2016. Performance landed at number 25 on the U.K. albums chart in 2018, prompting the swift creation of World as a Waiting Room just thirty days later in 2020. The joint effort Raze Regal & White Denim Inc. surfaced in 2023, succeeded the following year by 12, which incorporated jazz and soft-rock textures.
Petralli, Terebecki, and drummer Josh Block, all established figures in the Austin scene, launched White Denim during 2006. Block and Petralli had earlier collaborated in the alt-rock band Parque Torche, and Terebecki had played with Peach Train. The 7" EP Let's Talk About It constituted their first studio output that year, followed by the tour-only Workout Holiday EP. In 2008 they reworked earlier material into the full-length Explosion. By then a substantial U.K. following had developed, so Fits reached British listeners months ahead of its October 2009 American release. The lineup grew in 2010 with the addition of guitarist Austin Jenkins, and the band issued the self-released Last Day of Summer to clear accumulated song ideas from the prior four years. Downtown Records put out their fourth album D in 2011.
White Denim joined Wilco for selected U.S. and Canadian dates in 2012, with frontman Jeff Tweedy producing two songs on the subsequent Corsicana Lemonade, issued in 2013. That release became their first to appear on the Billboard 200 at number 147 and the U.K. Top 75 at number 65. The Pretty Green EP followed in 2014, after which Block and Jenkins departed in 2015. Petralli and Terebecki brought in guitarist Jonathan Horne and drummer Jeffrey Olson, then recorded the sixth album Stiff with producer Ethan Johns; it emerged in March 2016, peaked inside the U.K. Top 20, and also entered the upper reaches of the U.S. alternative and independent albums charts.
Petralli and Terebecki returned in 2018 alongside keyboardist Michael Hunter and drummer Conrad Choucroun of NRBQ. Performance marked their first release on City Slang Records and reached number 25 in the U.K. The more exploratory companion Side Effects appeared in 2019 and included the tracks "Shanalala" and "NY Money." During the COVID-19 lockdown the band remotely composed and tracked World as a Waiting Room in thirty days, with founding drummer Josh Block appearing on several cuts. Raze Regal & White Denim Inc. arrived in November 2023, presenting a jazz-inflected collaboration between Petralli and guitarist Raze Regal. The stylistically wide-ranging 12 followed in 2024, extending the group's explorations of jazzy fusion and soft-rock elements.
