Stenhammar grew up amid artistic surroundings and pursued music without formal instruction for the most part. Nevertheless, he occupied several leadership roles, serving as artistic director of both the Stockholm Philharmonic Society and the Göteborgs Orkesterförening, where his efforts helped turn the latter ensemble into a serious competitor with the capital’s musical institutions. His output divides into three stylistic phases. The opening phase draws on Romantic models, particularly Brahms and Liszt, while also reflecting his Swedish heritage. During the middle phase Stenhammar focused on refining his technique, placing greater weight on motivic development and emotional depth. The final phase merges elements of the earlier two, revealing accomplished orchestration and an impressionistic atmosphere alongside continued use of Swedish folk material.
