Biography
Acoustic guitarist William Coulter started laying down tracks in 1981, yet his solo path only gained real traction once the 1990s arrived. Alongside earlier work in the bands Isle of Skye and Orison, he joined cellist and fellow Orison member Barry Phillips on three joint releases—1990’s Simple Gifts, 1993’s Tree of Life, and 1996’s Music on the Mountain—that reimagined tunes associated with the mystic Christian sect the Shakers. Turning toward solo efforts steeped in new age-tinged Celtic music, Coulter issued Celtic Crossing in 1995, then Celtic Sessions in 1997 and The Crooked Road in 1999. Simple Gifts Collection appeared the following year.
