William Singe, born Liam Anthony Singe, first rose to attention as a member of the Australian boy band the Collective, which placed third during the fourth season of X-Factor Australia in 2012. Raised in the Sydney suburb of Forestville, the young Maori-Australian drew early motivation from his New Zealand-born father, who performed as a guitarist, bassist, and singer/songwriter. Following the competition, Singe and his bandmates issued a self-titled album in 2012 and continued performing until the group disbanded in 2014. Although cast as the rapper within the Collective, his vocal skills attracted widespread online notice through acoustic R&B renditions of songs by Justin Bieber, Fetty Wap, Alessia Cara, TLC, and Adele, most notably his version of Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” Launching a solo path in 2015, he joined the roster of Paradigm Talent Agency and set out on an international tour. He revealed his signing to RCA Records in July 2016, and the label issued his first single, “Rush,” in February 2017.
