Joseph Somers-Morales, known professionally as SoMo, emerged as a pop vocalist hailing from Denison, Texas. Although he displayed an early interest in performance, music largely remained absent from his life until his mother presented him with a piano during his early twenties. He captured a version of Chris Brown’s “Crawl” and posted the recording to YouTube in November 2009; the clip’s reception prompted additional uploads, among them a medley drawn from Drake’s Take Care issued on the album’s release date. On September 11, 2012, his birthday, he issued the mixtape My Life, which contained several of his initial original compositions developed alongside Cody Tarpley. Republic Records signed him the next year and handled the remastering and reissue of My Life. His self-titled debut album, chiefly crafted by Mick Schultz of Jeremih, appeared in April 2014 and entered the Billboard 200 at number six. My Life II arrived in September 2015 and included a guest turn by Trey Songz on the single “Hide & Freak.” From May 2016 through January 2017 he unveiled the tracks “Control,” “First,” and “Play” to preview his forthcoming second studio album, which surfaced as The Answers in March 2017. Half a year afterward he delivered the mixtape My Life III through his own SoMo, LLC label. He stayed active across 2018 by issuing a run of singles that would later surface on his third studio album, A Beautiful November, which reached listeners before the year ended.
