Among a select group of today's R&B vocalists able to convey both pain and joy through slight shifts in vocal nuance stands Elijah Blake. He first appeared on record as a teenager in 2006 under the name Redd Stylez, yet meaningful progress arrived years afterward when he co-penned Trey Songz's "Jupiter Love." By 2012 he had reached the Hot 100 Top 20 as co-writer of Usher's "Climax." Before issuing his assured debut mixtape Bijoux 22 that same year, he lent support to Nas, Rick Ross, and Rihanna. Later linked to No I.D.'s ARTium imprint through Def Jam distribution, Blake shaped the projects Drift (2014) and Shadows & Diamonds (2015), sharpening a self-reflective yet swaggering approach to R&B. His later self-released works encompass Audiology (2017), The Neon Eon (2021), and elijah. (2024), which represent only the full-length releases scattered among numerous singles and shorter releases, including a handful of duets with Jordin Sparks on 1990 Forever.

Born in his mother's native Dominican Republic, Blake grew up in Florida. Because his father is Haitian, French was his first language. He cultivated a passion for music during childhood church services and developed a deep attachment to Stevie Wonder's body of work. Recording initially as Redd Stylez, he issued his first track, Let It Play, in 2006. Soon afterward he co-wrote "Jupiter Love," which Trey Songz placed on the 2009 album Ready. Although not issued as a single, the ballad—credited to Blake under his birth name Sean Fenton—earned notable late-night radio rotation. A few years later Songz achieved a Top Ten R&B/hip-hop hit with another Blake composition, "Sex Ain't Better Than Love." Blake's profile rose further in 2012. He co-wrote Usher's "Climax," which topped the R&B/hip-hop chart and reached number 17 on the pop chart, plus Keyshia Cole's "Enough of No Love," which peaked at number seven on the R&B/hip-hop tally, while also contributing to material by Nas, Rick Ross, JLS, Rihanna, and the Game. Closing that year, he released Bijoux 22, his opening mixtape, featuring production from No I.D. and Salaam Remi; its original eight-track version included the Common-assisted single "X.O.X." Tracks Blake placed on albums by Ciara, Glenn Lewis, and James Arthur surfaced throughout 2013. The following year he appeared on Common's Nobody's Smiling and, as a songwriter, helped Belgian singer Selah Sue reach number one in her homeland with "Alone."

After signing with No I.D.'s Def Jam-distributed ARTium label, Blake issued another eight-song set, Drift, in 2014. J. Cole joined him on the standout "Vendetta," while "Strange Fruit," an original slow jam recalling the style of Missy Elliott and Timbaland, became his most prominent solo release up to that moment. "Strange Fruit" was soon eclipsed the next year by "I Just Wanna...," the confident lead single from Blake's next album, Shadows & Diamonds, which overflowed with the candid, attention-grabbing, and theatrical balladry typical of high-profile urban contemporary radio. Following the interim single "Whatever Happened," Blake and Def Jam parted company, yet the singer promptly resurfaced later in 2016 with the independent Blueberry Vapors. Amid additional standalone tracks, he maintained a consistent output of projects. The Steel Wool label released Audiology in 2017, highlighted by the minimal throwback slow jam "Black and Blue." As the decade closed, Blake delivered Bijoux 23 in 2018 and joined Jordin Sparks in 2019 for 1990 Forever, a collection of four duets.

A series of singles and featured appearances preceded The Neon Eon in 2021. That ten-song album, dense with collaborations, listed Tamar Braxton and Trinidad James among its guests; "Dark Skin" alone included D Smoke, Muni Long, and Durand Bernarr. Blake and Jordin Sparks reunited in 2023 for "Deux," which, together with other scattered singles, formed the subsequent Chateau Lane EP. The full-length elijah., promoted by singles such as "Ghostbuster" and "Sugarwater & Lime," arrived in 2024.
