Biography
R&B singer and tunesmith India Shawn crafts music marked by both intensity and openness, exploring life’s highs and lows via candid viewpoints and tracks that fuse vintage studio techniques with sleek West Coast pop leanings. Her prior experience penning material for fellow performers eased her transition into releasing music under her own name. She broadened the 2021 EP Before We Go into the full-length Before We Go (Deeper) in 2022, drawing on contributions from associates such as Anderson .Paak, Ambre, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
Los Angeles native Shawn launched her career inside the Full Circle songwriting collective. Across subsequent years she supplied tracks to Chris Brown, Diddy-Dirty Money, Keri Hilson, and additional acts, joined Kanye West’s Sunday Service ensemble, and supported Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals on the road. Her initial solo releases took the shape of mixtape-style efforts like 2012’s Origin and 2015’s Outer Limits. After sharpening her approach she concentrated on standalone singles for several years, then issued the Before We Go EP in 2021. That project showcased some of her most considered and meticulously crafted material up to that point, along with appearances by 6LACK, .Paak, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. In the following year she augmented the original seven tracks with seven new ones to create her debut studio album Before We Go (Deeper). Academy Award- and Grammy Award-winning producer D’Mile helmed most of the record, which also introduced performances by Kay Fox, Cory Henry, and Ambre.
