Drawing from the 1990s and early-2000s recordings of legendary figures such as Mariah Carey, Tamia, and Aaliyah, Los Angeles R&B singer Joyce Wrice shaped her own sound. On her 2021 debut album Overgrown she blended upbeat, optimistic melodies with guest appearances by hip-hop artists including Freddie Gibbs and Westside Gunn.

Born in California in 1992, Wrice began her career by posting homemade cover videos online and later distributing original tracks through various digital outlets. Her first notable project arrived in 2016 as the independently released EP Stay Around. In the following years she worked with fellow artists such as Kay Franklin, Mndsgn, and Jamma-Dee on multiple tracks while also performing shows abroad. The 2021 release Overgrown marked her first complete studio album, a 14-track set that most fully showcased her nostalgic yet forceful style and included contributions from Freddie Gibbs, UMI, Masego, Lucky Daye, and others.
