Biography
New Zealand native Willy Moon cultivated an unmistakable style as a singer, musician and producer, blending the raw energy of 1950s rock with the beats of present-day hip-hop while favoring sharply tailored vintage attire. Born in Wellington, he lost his mother to cancer at age twelve, prompting his father’s relocation to Saudi Arabia. Moon and his sister stayed behind in New Zealand until he turned eighteen and relocated to London. After spending a short period in Berlin, he returned to the British capital to pursue a recording contract. In 2010 he introduced his debut track, “I Wanna Be Your Man,” on MySpace, which quickly led to a deal with Universal Island Records’ Luv Luv Luv imprint; the label issued the song officially in 2011 and followed it later that year with “She Loves Me.” The single “Yeah Yeah” appeared in early 2012 and gained further exposure when it soundtracked an iPod television advertisement. That July, Third Man Records—Jack White’s label—put out Moon’s next release, “Railroad Track,” and later in the year he supported White on tour across the United Kingdom. His first full-length album, Here’s Willy Moon, arrived in early 2013.
