Biography
Los Angeles-based Year Long Disaster drew initial inspiration from the blues-rock and Southern rock movements of the 1970s, launching when Daniel Davies took the role of lead singer and guitarist. In April 2003, while contending with his own drug habit, Davies encountered Rich Mullins, the bassist and founding member of Karma to Burn. Mullins was likewise wrestling with addiction; after departing Karma to Burn to join the Dallas, TX, band Speedealer in hopes of leaving his troubles behind, he was dismissed from the group and traveled to Holland. There, friends urged him to deliver some recordings to contacts in the music industry in Los Angeles. Mullins intended his visit to last only a month, yet that was when he crossed paths with Davies. The pair quickly became close, and within a month of meeting they entered rehab together. Following one month of initial treatment plus six months in a sober-living halfway house, they finished the program in December 2003. In November 2004, Davies and Mullins attended a performance by Hours and Minutes featuring drummer Brad Hargreaves and afterward asked him to an informal jam session, unaware that the percussionist belonged to Third Eye Blind. Hargreaves accepted the invitation; the three musicians connected rapidly and soon established Year Long Disaster. Once the group signed to Volcom Entertainment, its self-titled debut album appeared in October 2007. The band returned in 2010 with the follow-up release Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed.
