Biography
Your Smith represents the bolder persona adopted by singer/songwriter Caroline Smith, blending bright adult-alternative pop with smoother R&B textures across her electro-acoustic material. Following a pair of indie folk releases alongside her supporting group the Good Night Sleeps, she shifted toward blues, R&B, and electronic elements on the independent 2013 album Half About Being a Woman. The evolution reached completion when she unveiled Your Smith via the Bad Habit EP in 2018.
Born and raised in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Smith picked up guitar lessons from her father. She soon performed locally and put out her debut record while still 16. After relocating to Minneapolis in 2006 for studies at the University of Minnesota, she launched a regular residency at 400 Bar, a spot that had previously welcomed homegrown favorite Mason Jennings along with Conor Oberst and Elliott Smith. Multi-instrumentalist David Earl joined forces with bassist Jesse Schuster and drummer Arlen Peiffer to form her core backing ensemble, the Good Night Sleeps. Under the name Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps, the outfit issued Backyard Tent Set in 2008. They followed with Little Wind in 2010, the same year Smith and Schuster put out Live at the Cedar.
Smith pursued a solo path with 2013’s Half About Being a Woman, then moved to Los Angeles after several collaborations drew her westward on multiple occasions. Early in 2018 she began performing under the Caroline Smith (Your Smith) billing, before releasing the project’s first EP, Bad Habit, through Neon Gold that August. The cover featured Smith holding a cigarette between her lips, an accessory she also incorporated into live performances. Your Smith returned in 2019 with the Wild Wild Woman EP on the identical label. Several co-writers contributed to the tracks, among them Schuster and Ethan Gruska.
