Ahleuchatistas, the Asheville, North Carolina experimental rock collective whose name is pronounced "AH-LOO-CHA-TEES-TAS," came together in 2002. Their sound weaves jazz, drone, classical, ambient, noise, and garage rock into instrumentals that shift unpredictably between spacious drift and sharp angles. The group’s moniker blends Charlie Parker’s “Ah-leu-cha” with Zapatistas, the Mexican revolutionary movement. Founding members guitarist Shane Perlowin, bassist Derek Poteat, and drummer Sean Dail issued their first record, On the Culture Industry, in 2003. The Same and the Other followed in 2004, What You Will appeared in 2005, and Even in the Midst arrived in 2007. After Dail departed in 2008, Illinois native Ryan Oslance took over on drums and performed on Of the Body Prone (2009) and Location Location (2011), both issued by the New York City avant-garde imprint Tzadik.
